Supporting children with parents or siblings with mental health issues - Angela Lawn
Our Time charity
Our Time supports children who have a parent with a mental illness. For many young people, growing up with a parent struggling with their mental health can be a difficult and overwhelming experience. It is often isolating, confusing – even frightening. It can bring with it immense responsibility, and also stigma. But with the right support and understanding these young people can go on to lead happy and fulfilling lives – just like any other child. This is our ambition...
Did you know? From 23 January 2023, schools need to identify young carers, so Our Time developed a guide to help.
We know that it is difficult to identify children who care for a parent with a mental illness – they’re often hidden in plain sight. Read our top tips

- The School Wellbeing Card set was developed by experienced Educational Psychologist, trainer and author, Dr Jerricah Holder to provide a platform for discussion, in which invaluable insight into how the young person views and makes sense of their experience of school can be sought and places the child’s voice at the centre of any planning. Grounded in resilience research, the deck of 40 picture cards, have been developed to reflect key risk factors associated with school avoidance or unhappiness at school, as well as strength and protective factors that promote school attendance and wellbeing. Through a card sorting activity, the young person is empowered to share their experiences of school and any worries or concerns that they might have. The School Wellbeing cards are designed to be used by education, health and social care colleagues and are suitable for children aged 7+.
- The Invisible String, Patrice Karst – storybook for KS1 (possibly KS2) – useful for separation anxiety

- Children’s Commissioner - Attendance has been a key focus for the Children’s Commissioner in 2022. The link lists some of the key findings / reports created so far.
- The Commission on Young Lives - The damage to vulnerable young lives at risk is now well-documented. Every day, young talent is being lost to gangs and the criminal justice system. The number of teenagers in danger of criminalisation, harm and violence, and diminished opportunities remains stubbornly high. The horrors caused to children by county lines in England are well-known, and the methods used to entice and trap children into criminality are increasingly brutal and sophisticated. There is a link between attendance / exclusion and the risk addressed by the commission.
