This week saw Safer Internet Day. The debate about young people’s access to the online world continues with a previous head of Google saying recently he regrets his role (and the of other ‘Tech Bros’) in not thinking through the potential impacts of social media / internet on children’s wellbeing. He now would like to see YP under 16 not able to have mobile ‘phones or using social media.

The arguments for a ban on ‘phones in schools or raising age limits on social to 16 plus are powerful and persuasive but we wonder if it is too late to put the genie completely back into the bottle?

At Headstart we’ve always advocated for children and young people to be given the skills and resources to survive and thrive online - to be able to get the best out of online life as well as being digitally resilient and able to safely navigate the downsides and dangers.

The digital resilience area of the website has tools and resources for a wide range of professionals as well as parents and carers and YP themselves. With guides, tools, training and more…

Empathy Lab

'Boys, books and reading for empathy’ (cost involved)

11th March 4.00 – 5.30pm

As our boys grow up, there are concerning trends which we believe educating for empathy has the potential to combat. This training helps you choose and use empathy-rich books which increase reading for pleasure, exploring what it is like to be a boy or young man in 2025, challenge pressures to conform to gender stereotypes, raise aspiration and support wellbeing.

Look out for the 2025 Reading for Empathy Collection launching on Thursday 13th February

Young Minds Young Designer Competition

We're calling on young people across the UK to get drawing and take part in M&S x YoungMinds Young Designer Competition – to design a new hoodie or sweatshirt – for the chance to have their design sold in M&S stores and online across the UK to support YoungMinds’ work.

The new hoodie and sweater will go on sale to celebrate this year’s Hello Yellow. When schools and communities come together on World Mental Health Day to show young people they’re not alone with their mental health.
